Louis Colin (Abbé Frédéric-Louis-de-Gonzague) was born in Lignières, France, on January 14, 1835. He studied in Paris, where he was ordained a priest on December 17, 1859. He taught in France and then in Montreal starting in 1862. In addition to teaching Canon Law, he held various other positions: vicar at Notre-Dame, superior of the Sulpicians of Canada, ecclesiastical superior of the Sisters of the Congregation and of the General Hospital, honorary canon of the cathedral. It was under his superiorship that the Canadian seminary in Rome and the philosophy seminary in Montreal were founded. He was one of the most admired and followed sacred orators of his time; his eloquence was persuasive. He died in Montreal on November 17, 1902.
