Top 10 Family Restaurants

Family dinners are always so much fun. It’s a time to socialize and bond with your loved ones while feasting on delicious food! However, going to a restaurant with kids may be tricky, as most of them tend to be picky with their meals. These top 10 kid-friendly restaurants are guaranteed to leave even the fussiest eaters happy and satisfied!

1. Jukebox Burgers

Juke Box Burgers

Diners are always the perfect place to reminisce on old memories, for creating new ones and indulging in classic diner dishes. Jukebox burger is undoubtedly the ideal place to come with your family. The retro décor will make you feel like you are going back in time to the 50’s and their menu is filled with traditional American dishes with a unique twist, from burgers (of course) to mac and cheese and more! It is no surprise that they were featured on Food Network’s “You Gotta Eat Here” and was voted as one of “Quebec’s Best Family Restaurants” from Today’s Parent. They use the best quality meat, fresh ingredients, and bake their buns fresh every morning. In addition, they have a special menu for kids where they can choose from classic diner dishes such as grilled cheese, chicken tenders, mac and cheese, and of course, their “Little Franky Burger!” The best part? Dessert of course! They have an overwhelmingly large selection of sweets, from milkshakes, ice cream sundaes, pies, and more. Their most impressive dessert is definitely “Everything & the Kitchen Sink,” which includes a kitchen sink (literally) filled with every ice cream flavour, topping, and sauce they have! Perfect to share with your family. It is truly a happy, nostalgic diner with delicious food that you and your family will love!

2. La Banquise

La Banquise

It’s totally okay for you and your kids to enjoy fast food every now and then. My advice is to skip the typical Wendy’s and McDonald's and head on over to this family-run business. When they first introduced poutine on their menu in 1980, they only had 2 options – Classic and Italian. Now, they serve over 30 unique poutine creations, including some vegan options, as well as other fast food type meals. In 2006, they underwent renovations to provide customers with a larger dining area, which makes it the perfect place to come with your family! The kids’ menu, which includes classics such as hot dogs and grilled cheese, comes with fries and raw veggies (so your kids will get their daily dose of greens)! They also have a choice of juice, milk, and chocolate milk. It’s a friendly and vibrant joint that has junk food both adults and kids alike will enjoy! Fun Fact: La Banquise originally started as an ice cream shop in 1968 before it turned into a 24-hour poutine/snack bar!

Location: 994 Rue Rachel E, Montréal, QC H2J 2J3

Hours: Open 24 hours

3. Jack Astor’s

Jack Astor's

Jack Astor’s has two goals: To serve delicious meals and to make sure you have a blast. They take pride in their food, especially their “Jack Chicken Fingers,” which are made with fresh and seasoned chicken tenders (never frozen). Having fun and eating chicken tenders? I mean, which kid doesn’t love that! All kids’ meals come with a kids’ size drink and dessert. For the adults, you have a variety of different options, from sandwiches, burgers, fajitas, steak, chicken tenders (who says they’re only for kids?), and more. You can always find something original and different on the menu, as they add a creative twist to a lot of their dishes. What makes this place even more fun? You can draw on the tables! Each table is provided with crayons and a large paper covering the table that you and your kids can doodle on. The staff, food, and ambiance truly make this an enjoyable evening with your family. Don’t take yourself seriously, let loose, and have fun!

4. Dunn’s Famous

Dunn's Famous

Smoked meat is a classic Montreal dish, and Dunn’s is an iconic restaurant to bring your family. This 24-hour local chain has been serving Montreal-style smoked meat since 1927, and the history and tradition continue to live on. What keeps Dunn’s in business is the fact that they have not changed anything since the beginning – they are always committed to providing the best quality smoked meat, and that means sticking to the authentic, old-fashioned recipe and technique that has been around since the start. Their tender, bold, high-stacked smoked meat sandwiches will be sure to impress your kids (Note: place is a little tight for people with children under the age of 4). But of course, since kids are picky, they also have the option of chicken tenders, hot dogs, pizza and more. Kids also get a dish of ice cream with their meal. Even with the fast-paced industry and constant competition, Dunn’s legacy continues to live on! Fun Fact: Myer Dunn’s great-grandson Andrew Kligman is currently preserving the family business!

6. Enotecca Monza

Enoteca Monza

Most fast food pizza places are too greasy, and other specialty Italian restaurants may be too fancy for children. Enotecca Monza is the perfect Italian restaurant that the whole family can enjoy! Adults can choose from a variety of pizza and pasta dishes, and children can choose from kid-friendly meals, such as their Bambino Cheese Pizza or Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce. All children’s meals are served with a beverage and ice cream, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of all children’s meals goes to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Of course, you can’t leave without having dessert! Their menu includes a sweet selection of delicious treats, including a Nutella Pizza (and let’s be honest, both children and adults love Nutella)!

9. Beauty’s Luncheonette

Beauty's Luncheonette

A classic diner open since 1942, this institution in Montreal continues to live up to its reputation. Hymie Scholnick, the legendary man behind this iconic diner, devoted his entire life to Beauty’s, waking up at the crack of dawn every morning and serving people with a smile and sincerity. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about this place - just good food being served for the past 76 years. Although they do not have a specific kids’ menu, this cozy, old school joint has breakfast and lunch dishes the whole family can enjoy. Delicious pancakes and waffles, their famous “Mish-Mash” omelet and tasty potatoes, smoked salmon on a St-Viateur bagel, and more traditional and unique favourites. Don’t leave here without having a milkshake! What’s a trip to a classic diner without having one? The Orange Julie tastes like an orange creamsicle and will take you back to your childhood, and the cookies and cream milkshake will definitely satisfy your kids’ sweet cravings. Hymie recently passed away, but his son and granddaughters have taken over so Beauty’s can live on. Fun Fact: Hymie bought this diner back in 1942 for 500$ when it was the Bancroft Stationary store.

10. Les Enfants Terrible

Les Enfants Terrible

I promise this isn’t a place to bring terrible kids, as the name entails! On the contrary, it is a great restaurant to come to with your family for a more upscale dining experience. Here you will find classic dishes with a unique touch, as well as flavourful and innovative ones. Although it is a little more on the fancier side, the restaurant has a homey feel to it. They have special dishes for children that are a bit more refined than the typical kids' menu, but they still keep it simple enough for them to enjoy (mac and cheese for the win)! Adults can go all out and indulge in more sophisticated dishes, from grilled European sea bass to spaghetti calamari and chorizo. It’s fine dining that both kids and adults can enjoy!
